My journey to using cannabis during pregnancy

My journey to using cannabis during pregnancy

I consumed cannabis during both my pregnancies. For my first, I consumed very small amounts and only before bed, which many people refer to as microdosing. At first I was reluctant to consume, even though cannabis helped me get off of pharmaceutical pills for my mental illness.

My pregnancies were not easy. Aside from prenatal anxiety and depression (which is different from general anxiety and depression because of hormones), I suffered from Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction. I’ll save you a trip to Google, and tell you that it’s when relaxin (hormone) releases too early and your pelvis separates; making physical movement painful. Naturally, these conditions followed me into my second pregnancy but the second time I medicated as needed. I was able to run after my 1.5 year old, turn over in bed and walk without needing a wheelchair.

It wasn’t until I came across the study from Dr. Melanie Dreher and created a mommy group on Facebook (now on a new platform) for other moms like me, that I felt more confident to consume throughout my second pregnancy. I consumed cannabis for medical purposes and it was not a decision I made lightly. I informed myself and surrounded myself with as much support as possible.

My first pregnancy check up, I openly admitted to my Obstetrician (OB) that I had been consuming cannabis. I explained to her that prior to becoming pregnant I was on three different pills for mental illness. I explained to her that I had done my research and I knew for a fact it was helpful, and most importantly being used medicinally.

My OB explained to both me and my husband that smoking <anything> during pregnancy is known to be harmful to the fetus. She went on to say that today, OBs do not tell pregnant women to immediately stop smoking, as it could lead to prenatal and fetal stress caused by withdrawals. She continued on about the dangers of smoking, but really didn’t know anything about cannabis in utero to tell me if it was harmful or not. After that, I shared the Dr. Melanie Dreher study and asked her to read it. Cannabis was never brought back up again as a negative issue throughout the duration of both my pregnancies.

I realize that this is NOT everyone’s experience. We know that most pregnant women would never disclose their cannabis use in fear of having CPS involved, being stigmatized and shamed. I personally believe that because I was advocating for myself, armed with credible information, clear about my REASON for medicating and speaking with prohibition-free language (cannabis, consume, medicated, instead of: weed, smoke, high); my doctors knew I was making an informed decision that I was not taking lightly, having to now consider this miracle in my womb.
